Fez Dispenser 1: 2001 Fez Dispenser's self titled debut began quite by accident. While working on the decidedly dark and atmospheric Psychic Enemies Network CD 'valis', Thorne would occasionally miss the mark. "Whenever a track would sound too upbeat or complex for PEN, I would just set it aside. By the time 'valis' was finished there was another hour's worth of music on the side." In fact, you can hear the Genesis of the Fez Dispenser sound on "Bowl Cut", a track on 'valis'.

Reviews of Fez Dispenser 1 inevitably site its eclectisism. The 15 tracks do reveal many of Matt's major influences. "The last thing I expected to see in reviews was-' this guy digs Muslim Gauze, Herbie Hancock and Robert Fripp'-. I mean most of it was dead on. It was a good sign that I was on the road to finding my own voice." Tracks like 'Castillian Fennel Dub" "Thank You Would Have Done Nicely" and "Lucky 14" were the birth of that distinctive voice.
